Unveiling the Veil: The Manipulative Mechanisms of Fox News

Ever since my personal "Road to Damascus" moment, I've begun to see Fox News through a new lens, one not obstructed by manufactured outrage or reinforcing dogmatism. Saddened as I am by the realization that I blindly fell for their dangerous propaganda for so long, I'm also compelled to share my newfound perspective with those who continue to fall prey to their deceitful dexterity. The headlines I happened upon today are examples of how this media giant camouflages its harmful intent.

Firstly, one can't miss the glaring headline "Biden calls Trump supporters 'garbage’”. Digging into that, we see a classic example of misrepresentation and spin. The context and the nuances are discarded to fuel the already high-running emotions of their viewers, fostering division rather than fostering unity. Biden probably didn’t call Trump supporters garbage. He was likely criticizing a subset of his supporters — the Christian nationalists and far-right extremists who are a real and immediate danger to our democracy.

Their intent of widening the partisan divide is also evident in the piece about VP Harris's tirade against the former president during her closing arguments speech. Instead of addressing the concerns and critiques raised by the vice-president, the article is framed in such a way that creates animosity and blinds its readers, preventing them from critically evaluating systemic issues.

Watching Fox News’s commentaries, it becomes clear that the media outlet is a platform for disseminating false narratives. "Trump denies knowing comedian who made Puerto Rico joke at rally," is a case in point. Despite global coverage and social media criticisms, Fox News peddles denial, leaving their viewers with a false impression.

The whitewashing of unpalatable truths fostered by Fox News, like the headline, "Trump's former GOP rival says it's more important to support policy over personality," helps bolster theocratic ideologies and figures whose actions could negatively impact marginalized communities, such as LGBTQ individuals and immigrants.

Fox News is not a neutral beacon of journalism, but rather a manipulative entity that fuels christo-fascist narratives. Its sensational headlines, lack of context, and skewed representations seek to uphold the desires of the rich while propagating the idea of a theocracy. People who fall into their trap are placed in danger of becoming foot soldiers in a war against empathy, compassion, and plurality — values intrinsic to our republic.

As someone who once fell for these manipulations, I implore others to critically evaluate what they consume, and not simply believe everything that's scrolled across the bottom of the screen. We should remember we're a nation that thrives on diversity, and resist falling for narratives birthed from fear and division. Allow me to leave you with a thought: "They say knowledge is power. But the real power is in knowing what to question".
